TWSBI Diamond 580 Fountain Pen - Clear, 1.1 Stub Nib

The idea behind the TWSBI Diamond 580 Clear fountain pen was to go back to basics and capture the simplicity and elegance of traditional writing instruments. The Diamond 580 is a classically styled fountain pen with a piston ink-filling system, smooth-writing steel nib and a screw-on cap. The traditional mechanism of the fountain pen, combined with a modern industrial design, embodies both the past and the present.

The TWSBI Diamond 580 piston ink-filling system uses only bottled ink and the clear body allows the user to view the level of ink remaining in the pen at all times. The Diamond 580 fountain pen has all detachable parts, as TWSBI felt that it was important to allow the user to disassemble and reassemble the pen to completely experience the traditional aspects of owning and using a fountain pen.

nice piston action; flow too low for stub nib February 2, 2015
Reviewer: Michael de Cupertino from Silicon Valley, CA United States
This pen is attractive, easy to fill and clean, and the fit and finish is pretty good. However, on the upstroke the stub nib is slow to start, and will often be unable to keep up the ink, especially if you go either fast or far. Occasionally the pen will not start on an initial upstroke, as you often do when flourishing some capital letters.

The stub tip also doesn't move smoothly across the paper. It's not that it snags; rather it just seems to drag. For general writing I prefer the italic of the Pilot Plumix/Prera, or even a Lamy 1.1mm italic nib.

The TWSBI clip feels very flimsy, and I'm afraid to clip it anywhere but a thin shirt-pocket. And the grip feels a little strange where it steps up for the metal band at the end where the nib unit threads in.

For the price I think I would recommend this to someone wanting a larger capacity piston-filler (because piston-filler pens are really cool), but I would suggest staying away from the stub/italic nibs.

Just recieved it September 8, 2014
Reviewer: Dave from Plantation, Florida
I just recieved the TWSBI 580  (I meant to order the 700 (my bad mouse click :)  )   That being said, I flushed it,  filled it (inked my hands too - being the newbie I am  :) )  and it wrote smoother than my Pilot Metropolitan!  Great pen (just remember to unscrew the top slightly when you write or the ink will stop flowing!  Enjoying the pen immensly.  Thank you !

Holds a generous amount of ink
Reviewer: Garrett Kubat from Blain, WA
This is one of my favourite pens. I generally prefer a fine or extra-fine nib due to having messy handwriting but this 1.1mm stub was a pleasant surprise. It writes extremely well and on most types of papers feels glassy smooth. The pen itself holds a generous amount of ink and looks amazing when filled with a vibrant colour. The body feels solid, the cap screws on to form a seal and it is just all-around one of my favourite pens. It is always inked up!
